Updates on Flash Flood in Bhote Koshi River of Nepal

Nepal was struck by severe flash floods on 26 August 2026, resulting in loss of life, widespread displacement and extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Nepal’s security and disaster-management agencies, local authorities and health services have been fully mobilised for search and rescue, evacuation, emergency medical assistance and relief operations. Authorities are also closely monitoring river systems and downstream flood risks.

So far, 389 bodies have been recovered, while many people, both locals and tourists, are still missing. According to the latest available information, 517 people from 28 countries, including 25 Canadian nationals, have been reported missing. These figures remain subject to verification as search and rescue operations continue.

At this stage, our immediate priority is to save lives and support search and rescue, evacuation and relief efforts in the affected areas. Concerned agencies of the Government of Nepal, security and medical personnel, local governments, NGOs, civil society organizations, and the private sector have been deployed round the clock to conduct search and rescue operations and to ensure the safe evacuation of survivors from the affected areas. In view of the extensive damage caused by the floods, the Government will continue to assess the situation and emerging needs on the ground and, where necessary, communicate specific requirements for assistance through established official channels.

The Government of Nepal has also issued an appeal to extend financial support to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund and the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, maintained at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. Nepalese living abroad and friends of Nepal or organizations, who wish to help Nepal during this time of disaster can now send relief funds directly to the Government of Nepal through this web portal: https://pmdrf.nchl.com.np/.

The system is easy to use and seamlessly accepts international/domestic cards (Visa/Master Card) and Nepal-based mobile banking or digital wallets.
