H.E. Bharat Raj Paudyal

H.E. Mr. Bharat Raj Paudyal assumed the responsibility of Ambassador of Nepal to Canada in March 2024. Earlier, he was the Foreign Secretary of Nepal from 09 October 2020 to 05 December 2023. Mr. Paudyal handled Nepal’s multilateral affairs as the Head of United Nations, International Organizations and International Law Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between May 2016 and October 2020. Concurrently he was also the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry during that period. From May 2012 till May 2016 Mr. Paudyal was Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan with concurrent accreditation as non-residential ambassador to Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Turkey.

During 2011-2012, Mr. Paudyal headed the South Asia and SAARC Division at the Foreign Ministry. Mr. Paudyal as the Director General of the Department of Passports provided leadership at the most critical time of Nepal’s transition from manual to machine-readable passports during 2010-2011 and established the Department of Passports among very few public institutions in Nepal to be recognized with ISO 9001certification.

He was Nepal’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva between 2006 and 2010. In a career spanning over 36 years, he also served in different capacities for the Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe Americas, Protocol, Policy Planning and Administration Divisions of the Foreign Ministry at different times. Mr. Paudyal joined Nepal’s civil service in 1987 and progressively advanced his career to become the Foreign Secretary in 2020.

Ambassador Paudyal holds master’s degree in development studies from the International Institute of Social Studies, the Netherlands; Master’s Degrees in Political Science and Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Tribhuvan University. He is a postgraduate in diplomatic studies from the University of Oxford and University of Malta.
