Nepal-Canada Relations
Overview
Nepal and Canada established diplomatic relations on 18 January 1965 and have been enjoying long-lasting friendly relations ever since. Nepal opened its embassy in Ottawa on 1 October 2009. Nepal has also established honorary consulates in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Victoria. High Commission of Canada in India is concurrently accredited to Nepal. Canada has its honorary consulate in Kathmandu.
The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of establishment of Nepal-Canada diplomatic relations.
Nepal-Canada Friendship Group has also been formed in the Federal Parliament of Nepal.
Exchange of Visits
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba paid an official visit to Canada from 17-21 September 2024.
Speaker of the Senate of Canada Mr. George J. Furey, Q.C, paid an official visit to Nepal on 10-11 February 2020.
Bilateral Consultation Mechanism
An MoU on the establishment of Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) was signed on 24 September 2018 between the two countries. Till the date three meetings of the BCM has already been held.
Development Cooperation
Canada has been supporting Nepal in various sectors including hydropower, energy, wastewater management, irrigation, and infrastructure development. Canada has also provided humanitarian support during difficult times including the 2015 earthquake, 2017 floods and landslides, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Canada provides cooperation primarily through Canada International Development Agency (CIDA) and other multilateral channels.
Trade
As per the statistics of Department of Customs Nepal, Nepal exported goods worth Nrs. 1284084 thousand to Canada and imported goods worth Nrs. 9074623 thousand from Canada in the FY 2081/82.
Investment
As of FY 2022/23, Nrs. 3.65 bil. FDI has been received from Canada, which is invested in 52 different countries and have generated 2,455 jobs. (DoI, Nepal)
Tourism
As per the data provided by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), 16,073 tourists visited from Canada to Nepal in 2024; the number was 14690 in 2023.
People-to-people relations
Canada is home to a large number of Non-Resident Nepali (NRN). They play an important role in contributing development efforts of Nepal and also enrich the multicultural heritage of Canada through Nepali language, literature, arts, music, culture and cuisines.
Canada is also one of the popular study destinations for Nepali students in recent years. Canada remained the second most preferred destination for Nepali students to pursue higher education as 15,982 students took no objection certificate for study in Canada in the FY 2080/81.
